Coon Rapids, MN - The RCTC Yellowjackets women's soccer team knew they would have to play a great game in the Region Championship to down Anoka-Ramsey, and they did. Unfortunately, it wasn't quite enough as the Golden Rams took advantage of an early goal, and then held on for the 1-0 win. With the win Anoka earned a berth in the District Championship.
The Yellowjackets did a fantastic job on the defensive side of the ball, holding Anoka playmaker Liberty Morrice-Bartlett to 0 shots on goal and only 2 shots total. Unfortunately, it was a Lauren Ives goal only two minutes into the game that proved to be the difference. Anoka, took that 1-0 lead into the break and then held on throughout the second half. RCTC managed four shots on goal, while Anoka had 15.
Yellowjacket goalkeeper Fatima Sanchez-Hernandez had 14 saves for the game, keeping the Jackets alive and with a chance. RCTC, just couldn't get a shot past the Anoka keeper.
RCTC finishes the season 7-6-2. The Yellowjackets scored 51 goals in just 15 games (3.4 gpg), while holding their opponents to only 19 goals (1.23 gpg). Mae Litschauer led RCTC with 16 goals and 10 assists for a total of 42 points, while Jaila Hill added 10 goals and 8 assists. Kaela Cheak had 8 goals while MaKenzie Swanson-Larson had 7 goals and 20 total points.
Sanchez-Hernadez played every goal in net for RCTC, allowing only 19 goals with 146 saves (.885 save %) and 6 shut-outs.
It was quite the turnaround season for the Jackets who finished last year at 0-8-2. The 7 wins were the most for RCTC since 2014 when they had 11.
