Yellowjackets Crown Two Champions in Competitive Luther Open

This past Saturday Rochester Community and Technical College competed at the Luther Open in Decorah, IA. This tournament brought in nearly 300 wrestlers from 20 teams representing NCAA, NAIA, and NJCAA schools.

Leading the Yellowjackets and winning championships were Shane Siewert (Lake City, MN) 174 Elite and Morgen Moreno (Hayfield, MN) 197 Silver.

Siewert put together a string of five straights wins to top the 174 Elite bracket. In the semis, Shane defeated Jordan Gundrum of Upper Iowa University who was a two-time All-American and national runner-up while competing at Ellsworth before transferring to UI. "Shane is very workmen in his wrestling style. He has solid defense and is unbelievably strong," noted coach Travis Rutt.

Morgen Moreno also put together three solid wins on the way to winning the championship in the 197 Silver bracket. Moreno started the day with a 19-6 major decision over Hunter Hagen of NIACC. In the semis, he pinned Lawrence Thomas of La Crosse in 4:11. In the finals, Morgen wrestled a hard-fought 5-2 decision over Brock Meyer of Wartburg. "I am extremely happy with Morgen's wrestling today. He remained focus in his matches and listens well," said coach Randy Rager.
