Winona, MN - The MCAC announced its All-Southern Division team today, and the RCTC men's basketball team was well represented. The Jackets placed three players on the 14 person team. Sophomores Kong Kong and Ray Adams, as well as freshman Jerome Cunningham were selected by the coaches of the Southern Division.
Kong, from Mankato, MN, averaged 16.6 points per game during the regular season to lead the Jackets in scoring. The sophomore also averaged 10.9 rebounds per game. Kong's points per game were 9th in the league, while he lead the league in rebounding. Kong was also a dominating presence on defense as he lead the MCAC in blocks with 49.
Adams, from Rochester John Marshall HS, averaged 12 points per game while playing nearly 27 minutes per contest. He shot over 50% from the floor during the regular season. Ray scored a season high 32 points in the Jackets road win over regular season champion St. Cloud Tech. Cunningham, from Fridley, MN was one of only two first year players to grab a spot on the All-Division team. He averaged nearly 12 points per game and shot an amazing 65% from the floor. Cunningham played in all 27 games for the Jackets (starting 7) and proved a critical piece of the puzzle for RCTC down the stretch. Some of his biggest games came against the top competition in the South as he had 22 points in a road win against St Cloud, and followed that up with 28 points in the Jackets home win against Riverland on February 15th.
Kong, Adams, Cunningham and the rest of Coach LaPlante's Yellowjackets head to Coon Rapids, this weekend for the Region XIII Men's Basketball Championship on the campus of Anoka-Ramsey CC. The Jackets are the #2 seed out of the south and will take on the North #3 seed Hibbing on Friday night at 7:00. The winner will advance to the Region Semi-Finals on Saturday, with the Championship game scheduled for 5:00pm on Sunday. The winner will receive the Region's automatic bid to the NJCAA National Championships, hosted by Rochester Sports and RCTC on the RCTC campus March 11-14.
