RCTC closes out 2018 with two wins at Anoka Classic

Anoka, MN - The RCTC Yellowjackets headed into the weekend's Anoka Classic riding a 5 game win streak, with their last loss coming back on November 20th.  The Jackets left Anoka on a seven game win streak, winning both games at the tournament and avenging an early season loss to Dakota County Technical College.

The Jackets took on DCTC in the tournament opener on Friday, winning by the score of 74-71.  The two teams played on RCTC's home court back on November 14th, with DCTC knocking off RCTC  81-65.  In Friday's game it looked as if the Yellowjackets were going to turn the tables and runaway from the Blue Knights as they jumped out to a 41-28 halftime lead.  But DCTC had different plans as they cut into the lead throughout the second half, eventually taking their first lead of the game at 55-53 with 11:11 remaining in the game.  From there it was a back and forth affair with neither team able to pull away from the other.  With 2:48 left in the game it was tied 67-67. RCTC scored the next 5 points on a layup by Mark Manyuon and a 3 pointer by Kong Kong. Then with 5 seconds remaining and the Jackets holding on to a 72-71 lead, Karmoga Lero knocked down two free throws to seal the win.

RCTC was lead in scoring by Naa'il Mahdi with 17 points.  Mahdi was joined in double figures by Mark Mayuon (14), Kong Kong (13), and Ben Opsahl (12). The Jackets shot 43% from the floor and outrebounded the Blue Knights 45-35.

Game two for the Jackets against Bismarck State turned into a bit of a track meet.  The high flying mysitcs who were averaging nearl 100 points per game on the season, kept the pace high thourghout, but it was the Jackets who took advantage, scoring a season high 113 points in the 113-66 win.  The 66 points marked the lowest offensive output of the season for the Mystics and was 32 points below their season average.  RCTC put 6 players in double figures on the night as DaMichael Brown and Kong Kong both dropped in 16, Mark Manyuon had 15, and Mickey Jah, Karmoga Lero, and Ben Opsahl each added 12.

The Jackets hit for a seson high 60% on the day and were 11-18 (61%) from behind the arc. Defensively, RCTC held the Mystics to 31% shooting and 5-20 (25%) from 3 point range. RCTC also outrebounded Bismarck 48-36 and had 10 steals.

RCTC rides their 7 game winning streak into the holiday break, as they are now off untill January 4th and 5th when they play in the DCTC Classic. The Jackets will take on North Dakota State College of Science in their opener, and then square off for the third time with DCTC on Saturday the 5th.
