Rochester, MN - The Rochester Community and Technical College footbll team spent the first two weeks of the season on a bus, as they travelled to Mesabi Range and Dakota Bottineau, so it was good to be home for once on Saturday. The Jackets gave the home fans plenty to cheer about as they held off two-time defending MCAC champion Northland to win 33-26.
In a game that saw the Jackets get out to an early lead, only to have Northland mount a fourth quarter comeback it was the leg of kicker Braulio Arango-Aguilar that may have been the biggest difference in the game. Arango-Aguilar accounted for 11 points, including field goals of 30, 39, and 40 yards to go along with two extra points.
The RCTC defense got things rolling with a fumble recovery on Northland's first possession of the game. Arango-Aguilar hit two field goals in the first and the Jackets recovered a blocked punt in the endzone for a safety to take an 8-0 lead into the first quarter break. Josh Miser blocked the Northland punt out of the back of the endzone for the two points.
Quarter #2 started with a blocked kick by Northland and a 31 yard run for the touchdown. The Jackets responded with a Jason Stewart 5 yard touchdown run and another field goal by Arrango-Aguilar to lead 15-6 at the half.
Arrango-Aguilar hit his third field goal of the game with 9:35 remaining in the third quarter, and the Jackets followed with a 65 yard touchdown run by Isarael Lozoya to give the themselves a 25-6 lead late in the third. From there Northland made their run, scoring on three touchdown runs in the fourth quarter to take a 25-26 lead with only 3 minutes remaining in the contest. With 1:14 to go RCTC quarterback Justin Lynn hit Severyn Foster for 25 yards and the game winning touchdown.
For the game RCTC had 364 yards of offense including 14-25 for 170 yards and a touchdown from Lynn. Lozoya had 8 carries for 126 yards and a touchdown to go along with 3 catches for 18 yards. Stewart had 6 carries for 22 yards and his touchdown. Severyn Foster and Cam Green each had 5 catches to lead the Jackets receivers. Foster had 78 yards and a TD while Green had 76 yards.
Ken Bohnenkamp lead the Jackets with 10 tackles including 1.5 tackles for loss. Prentiss Sayeweh had 9 tackles and half a sack.Erik Snook picked up half a sack while Diego Muniz added a sack of his own. Kenny Nwachi picked up an interception to stop a Northland threat.
As a team the Jackets had 2 sacks and a staggering 11 tackles for loss.
RCTC is back on the road next weekend September 14th as they head to Vermillion to take on the Ironmen with kickoff slated for 1:30pm.
The Jackets then return home for HOMECOMING on Saturday, September 21st vs Central Lakes Raiders. Kickoff for Homecoming is under the lights at the Regional Stadium at 7:00pm
