Minneapolis, MN - The RCTC baseball team got their season off on the right foot last night and early this morning as they completed a two game sweep in their season opening series against Vermillion. The two teams played their double split over two days at the Vikings Stadium with game one beginning at 11:pm on Saturday night followed by game two schedule for 1:30am on Friday. Fortunately for the Jackets their are no classes at RCTC today so they are able to get some rest after the two wins.
In game one the Jackets got outstanding pitching and some timely hitting as the downed the Ironmen 7-0. Drew Simmons, Collin Krick, and Ryan Roby combined on the 6 hit shutout. Simmons went 5 innings, striking out three and giving up 5 hits, while Krick went 2 innings, struck out 2 and gave up no hits, and Roby closed things out allowing just one hit in his inning of work while striking out one. The Jackets offense was lead by Zach Wolter who went 3-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Cole Nisbit went 2-3 with a double, 2 RBI and a run scored, while Grant Miskimins and Alex Portes each added an RBI.
In game two it was once again the Jacket pitchers leading the way, as T Mickelson, went 4 innings, giving up only 2 runs on 3 hits. Paxton Gravlin and Lucas Fredin pitched the final three innings not allowing a hit and combining for 4 strikeouts. Brad Barkema provided the offensive fireworks as the sophomore had a two run triple and scored a run. Lucas Fredin had 2 RBI while Trenton Dahnert and Parker Anderson picked up one RBI each. The Jackets benfitted from 12 Vermillion walks in the game.
RCTC is now preparing for their Spring Break trip to Myrtle Beach, SC next weekend. On the trip the Jackets will play 12 games over the course of 8 days.
