Myrtle Beach, SC - The RCTC Yellowjacket baseball team is building upon their early succes, and are now riding a FIVE game win streak on their Spring Break trip. The Jackets who are currently 8-4 wrapped up their trip with five straight wins.
Tuesday night, RCTC downed Lehigh Carbon 15-8. The Jackets had 12 hits, and took advantage of LC errors and 4 walks in the win. RCTC's bats were hot as they got three homeruns (Kai Hershberger, Cole Nisbit, and Sanders Napoles) and a double (Brad Barkema). Hershberger and Nisbit each had 4 RBI, while Napoles picked up 3 and Barkema had 2. Grant Miskimins went 5 1/3 giving up just 1 run on 3 hits for the win.
In the Jackets double header on Wednesday, their bats stayed hot as they downed Union County 8-3 and Bergen Community College 6-5 in a thriller. In the opener, RCTC got a fantastic outing from pitcher Levi DeYoung. The freshman threw a complete game 5 hitter, allowing only 1 earned run while striking out 7. DeYoung got all the offense he would need in the third inning as the Jackets put up four runs in the frame. Cole Nisbit continued swinging the bat well going 2-4 with 2 doubles. Miskimins had two RBI as did Izaak Stevens. Hershberger continued to supply the power as the right fielder homered again.
In game two of the day, RCTC and Bergen CC did a little extra work, as they went to the 8th inning tied at 4. In the top of the 8th Bergen scored once to take the 5-4 lead before RCTC came up with two in the bottom of the 8th for the walk-off win. In the 8th Miskimins doubled to score pinch runner Trenton Dahnert, before Jorge Reyes singled in the winning run. RCTC got 7 2/3 from T Mickelson who gave up 4 earned runs and struck out 6.
On Friday, the Jackets once again stayed hot offensively. The Jackets scored 19 runs in their two games as they downed MacMurray 11-9 and Henry Ford 8-6. Against MacMurray, Alex Portes had three hits and two RBI, Jorge Reyes had two hits, one of which was a double and three RBI, while Devin Knudson added two hits in the game. Three pitchers combined for the win, as Jose Angles went 2 1/3, Zach Nelson went 1 2/3, and Drake Bakkum went 3 innings. The trio combined for 8 strikeouts.
In the final game of the Spring Break trip the Jackets held off Henry Ford 8-6. RCTC pounded out 11 hits including 2 each by: Kai Hershberger, Cullen Bruce, Devin Knudson, and Sanders Napoles. Zach Wolter had a double and 2 RBI. Drew Simmons threw 6 innings for the win.
With news of the NJCAA postponing all spring sport competition from Saturday, March 14th through Friday, April 3rd. The Jackets will not be playing their final series of their spring break trip on the 14th. Games currently schedule for March 27, 28, and 29, and April 2nd will also be postponed. RCTC's games versus the JV squads from Saint Mary's and Luther will be cancelled as the NCAA has cancelled their spring seasons.
